Malaysia's Industrial Courts set for AI-powered transcription overhaul

21 March 2025
GEORGE TOWN: Plans are underway to upgrade all Industrial Courts in Malaysia by incorporating digital recording systems, utilising advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI) to generate real-time transcripts during case proceedings.

Human Resources Minister Steven Sim said that this initiative was aimed at improving efficiency, reducing costs, and standardising communication for all stakeholders involved.

He said that RM5 million had been allocated for the project.

"To begin with, we have set aside RM5 million for this initiative, with the first phase focusing on the Industrial Courts in Penang. Ultimately, the system will be implemented across all Industrial Courts nationwide," he said.

"The goal is to display real-time transcripts on-screen, which will enhance the effectiveness of justice delivery. This move will improve transparency in case hearings, thereby fostering greater fairness and confidence in the country's Industrial Courts," he said in his speech at the launch of the Penang Human Resources Ministry's building here today.

Sim also said that the building currently housed two courtrooms for Industrial Court cases, with plans to add another courtroom to handle the Social Security Organisation's (Perkeso) appeal tribunal cases.

"At present, these cases are heard in Kuala Lumpur, but in the future, claimants from Kedah, Perlis, and Penang will be able to have their cases heard here, reducing the need for them to travel to Kuala Lumpur," he said.

He also announced the formation of a task force, which will review 28 pieces of legislation under the ministry, including the Industrial Relations Act, as part of an effort to streamline Malaysia's labour justice system.
