Google Universal Analytics is a popular website analytics platform that has been around for over 10 years. However, Google has announced that it will be sunsetting Universal Analytics on July 1, 2023. This means that it will no longer process new data after that date.
If you are using Universal Analytics to track your website traffic and customer behaviour, you will need to upgrade to Google Analytics 4 (GA4) by July 1, 2023. GA4 is the successor to Universal Analytics and offers a number of new features and capabilities, including:
- Cross-platform tracking: GA4 can track users across multiple devices and platforms, giving you a more complete view of their behaviour.
- AI-powered insights: GA4 uses machine learning to provide you with more insights into your data, such as how users are finding your website and what they are doing once they arrive.
- Better privacy controls: GA4 is designed to be more privacy-friendly, with more control over how your data is collected and used.
- If you do not upgrade to GA4 by July 1, 2023, you will no longer be able to collect new data with Universal Analytics. This means that you will lose out on valuable insights into your website traffic and customer behaviour. You will also be unable to create new reports or dashboards in Universal Analytics.
In addition, if you are using Universal Analytics to connect to other Google products, such as Google Ads or Google Marketing Platform, you will need to update those connections to GA4. Otherwise, you will not be able to use those products to make informed decisions about your marketing campaigns.
We strongly recommend that you upgrade to GA4 as soon as possible to ensure that you have uninterrupted access to your website traffic and customer behaviour data.
Here are some of the implications of not switching to GA4:
- You will lose out on valuable insights into your website traffic and customer behaviour.
- You will be unable to create new reports or dashboards in Universal Analytics.
- You will not be able to connect to other Google products, such as Google Ads or Google Marketing Platform.
- You may experience difficulty troubleshooting problems with your website.
- You may miss out on new features and capabilities that are released in GA4.
- We encourage you to upgrade to GA4 as soon as possible to avoid these implications.
So, what can you do to upgrade to GA4?
- Create a GA4 property and a web data stream in Google Analytics.
- Open the Google app and follow the instructions to link your GA4 property and automatically set up GA4 tagging.

If you have already upgraded to GA4 and/or migrated your Meta pixel, then no action is required.
Please note that you will not be able to export your Universal Analytics data to GA4. However, you can still access your Universal Analytics data for historical reporting purposes until July 1, 2024.
